This study aims to comprehensively address the strategic role that non-governmental
organizations (NGOs) and educational institutions play in promoting innovation and the
development of green business in Albania. At a time when the country is undergoing a
critical transition towards a sustainable and environmentally friendly economy, the
interventions of civil society and the education system are more essential than ever for
building human capacities, disseminating knowledge, and mobilizing communities toward
sustainable development.
Through an in-depth analysis of the existing literature, statistical data, and an empirical
case study approach focusing on the city of Berat and other high-development-potential
regions, this paper seeks to identify best practices implemented to date, major challenges
faced by local actors, and provide concrete recommendations for policymakers, educational
institutions, and the nonprofit sector.
In Berat—a UNESCO World Heritage city with rich cultural and environmental heritage—the
fusion of traditional values with modern innovation practices provides a unique example of
integrating sustainable development into educational and economic practices. Local NGOs
have played a key role in raising public awareness on environmental issues, organizing
clean-up campaigns in public spaces, supporting farmers through green approaches, and
fostering sustainable tourism. Simultaneously, schools and higher education institutions
have incorporated environmental education and green technology topics into their curricula,
preparing younger generations to be more aware and engaged in sustainability issues.
The study highlights several successful initiatives, including partnerships between
universities and NGOs in internationally funded projects, the creation of innovative spaces
such as community labs and training centers for green entrepreneurship, and the active
engagement of youth in local decision-making platforms. However, the paper also points
out numerous challenges, such as the lack of sustainable funding, weaknesses in
institutional coordination, and the need for a more supportive legal framework for green
sector development.
In conclusion, the paper emphasizes the need for an integrated and sustainable approach
that includes all segments of society—from primary education to cross-sectoral
collaborations—with the aim of fostering a green economy and a new culture of
development in Albania. The recommendations presented suggest strengthening
partnerships among NGOs, educational institutions, and local authorities, investing in local
capacity-building, and establishing effective mechanisms for evaluating and measuring the
impact of green interventions.
